This Week @ Kunyung!

IMG_0532What a flurry of excitement at Kunyung Primary School this week! It has flown by with many examples of the engaging and wondrous learning that takes place by the Bay on a consistent basis!

Student Led Tours: Watching and listening to our students explain and articulate their learning to parents has been a definite highlight of the week! Our students continue to amaze us with their knowledge and understanding of what they learn and how they learn it………we sincerely hope that our family community enjoyed this sharing experience with their children and the class! A big thank you parents for your support, children for sharing and teachers for so warmly opening your classroom doors to our community!

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY: Congratulations to all Kunyung students who represented us today at the District Cross Country! ALl students represented Kunyung with pride and a great sense of fair play! Well done! 🙂

Middle School surprise! All Middle School students were given a surprise start to the week when they arrived at school to find themselves being taught in another era! Teachers were transformed into the kind of traditional teachers many of us (OK- some of us!) had as students. Classroom tables were placed in rows, students performed dictation, spelling tests and were asked to read in front of the class. It was a silent room and students were made to stand up when a teacher entered the room! Some teachers were even harshly criticised in front of their class by the Infant Mistress (That was me!) Why? The Middles are starting a Unit of Inquiry with an Historical focus “People and places change over time” and this was their starting provocation! Provoke it did……some of the reflections were fantastic! This surprise was followed up with a trip to Coal Creek on Wednesday and the students experienced more examples of how life was in a different era and many changes that have taken place! Thank you to all parents and teachers who accompanied our students!

Surprise visitors to the Prep area: Some of our Preps were very excited to have a visit from their Pre School teachers this week. We invited the Kunyung Pre School teachers to come for a visit and they arrived on Monday morning!

What a lovely surprise for our students but an even lovelier reaction from their Pre School teachers. We are hoping to extend these visits to other Pre School teachers in the coming weeks!

Cyber Safety Parent Forum: A HUGE thank you to the 40 parents who came to our Cyber Safety Forum on Wednesday night! Mr David Barnes and Mr Craig Entwistle prepared and delivered loads of great, useful information and we thank them for their time and effort! If we have enough interest we will look at running the session again as an encore!!

WELCOME KUNYUNG PRIMARY SCHOOL!

Dear Parents! 🙂

Welcome to our first Kunyung Primary School BLOG! We have established these blogs to communicate the events and happenings of the classrooms and the learning that occurs within and outside their walls!

The purposes of this form of communication are:

1. To communicate and share the Teaching and Learning @ Kunyung Primary School with our community

2. To communicate Whole School events, classroom activities and classroom expectations, such as homework, to students and parents- that can be accessed from home!

3. To provide a forum for parents, students and teachers to ask questions or make positive comments that can be accessed by students and teachers!

It is our first attempt at this form of communication and interaction so please be patient!

Keep checking the blog for new posts and Happy Blogging!

TRANSDISCIPLINARY SKILLS!

At Kunyung Primary School, we believe that the development of understanding is enhanced through the acquisition and application of a range of skills. Literacy and Numeracy skills are essential, as they  provide students with the tools of inquiry.  In addition to these, our students master a whole range of skills relevant to all subject areas, which will prepare them for lifelong learning both within and beyond their school years.

Within their learning, our students acquire the following set of transdisciplinary skills:

Thinking Skills – acquisition of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, dialectical thought and metacognition. Social Skills – accepting responsibility, respecting others, cooperating, resolving conflict, group decision making, adopting a variety of group roles. Communication Skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, presenting, and non verbal communication. Self Management Skills – gross motor skills, fine motor skills, spatial awareness, organization, time management, safety, healthy lifestyle, codes of behaviour and informed choices. Research Skills – formulating questions, observing, planning, collecting data, recording data, organizing data, interpreting data and presenting research findings.

LEARNER PROFILE ATTRIBUTES!

The IB Learner Profile underpins everything that is taught and demonstrated at Kunyung Primary School.   It is the foundation upon which our students learn, and our whole community supports, models and promotes its core values.  We all strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open Minded, Caring, Risk Takers, Balanced and Reflective.

The Learner Profile outlines the qualities and attributes we endeavour to instil in each individual.  It highlights the life skills needed to equip them with the knowledge and dispositions to promote intercultural understanding, and a will to make the world a better place.

We teach and encourage cultural diversity, sustaining the planet and problem solving for peaceful solutions. We empower students to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators to use their cognitive skills to find out about the world in which we live.  Our students are knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and risk-takers, and they are also encouraged to have a voice in the world and to promote peace and sustainability.

Our students become internationally minded and are equipped to make decisions which will contribute effectively to life in the 21st century.

The behaviours encouraged and qualities demonstrated will look different at each stage of schooling, and even between each child.  Individual diversity is fostered and valued, and so there are many ‘right’ ways for our students to embrace our Learner Profile philosophy.

It is vital that there is also a focus on development of personal Attitudes towards people, towards the environment and towards learning, attitudes that contribute to the wellbeing of the individual and of the group. PYP students should demonstrate: Appreciation, Commitment, Confidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence, Integrity, Respect and Tolerance.

Inquiry Learning is the process we use to develop our student’s skills in a variety of areas of learning. These include: testing theories, collecting and interpreting data, constructing and considering alternative explanations, clarifying existing ideas and reappraising perceptions of events. Students are also encouraged to identify assumptions, take and defend a position, problem solve using a variety of methods, analyse, evaluate and research.

Students learn to apply their thinking skills critically and creatively to approach complex problems and make decisions objectively.
